From 23rd to 27th June 2025, Paradiso TB Patients’ Trust carried out an Organizational Capacity Assessment (OCA) to reflect on how effectively the organization is working. The assessment provided an opportunity to look deeply into the difference Paradiso is making in the lives of TB patients and survivors, while also evaluating how the organization supports its volunteers and engages with communities, traditional leaders, and key stakeholders. The goal was to identify strengths, gaps, and opportunities for growth to ensure that Paradiso continues delivering relevant, sustainable, and high-impact programs.
Throughout the week, the assessment examined various aspects of the organization’s operations, including the wellbeing of volunteers asking whether they receive the support they need and the effectiveness of internal systems. It also looked at how the organization is governed and led, with a specific focus on financial and administrative systems, human resources and staffing, monitoring and evaluation capacity, stakeholder engagement, community partnerships, volunteer support mechanisms, and strategic planning.
What made this process particularly meaningful was the inclusive approach taken. Volunteers, traditional leaders, community stakeholders, board members, and staff were all engaged in the assessment process. Each participant was given the chance to share honest feedback, experiences, and insights. This collective reflection provided a well-rounded view of the organization’s current state and helped identify practical ways to improve its work.
The process was facilitated by Mr. Charles Banda, whose technical guidance and encouragement created a safe space for open dialogue. His support was instrumental in helping the team explore complex areas, understand patterns in the data, and identify clear and actionable next steps.
Throughout the assessment, the leadership of Executive Director Mr. Bruce Matewere and Technical Advisor Miss Mara Kumbweza Banda was evident. Despite their busy schedules, both leaders took time to fully participate in the sessions not only to guide discussions but also to listen and learn. Their presence sent a powerful message that at Paradiso, learning and improvement are everyone’s responsibility and growth is a shared goal.
The OCA reaffirmed Paradiso’s commitment to continuous improvement and accountability. It revealed a strong foundation of community trust and volunteer commitment, while also highlighting opportunities to strengthen internal coordination, documentation, and data systems. There was a clear call for regular staff development and a desire to build more sustainable partnerships with both local and international actors.
Moving forward, the findings from the assessment will guide Paradiso’s organizational development plan and help refine programming strategies. The action points identified will be prioritized and implemented in phases, with clear accountability measures in place. This process marks a significant step in strengthening Paradiso’s capacity to serve, and reaffirms its vision for lasting impact across Malawi.
